Articles of Piracy
Krewe Motto. Get on the Good Foot
Krewe Logo. The Krewe’s logo shall be a Peg Leg Pirate
Krewe Colors. Krewe Colors shall be Tropical and Black
Mission Statement Ye Notorious Krewe of the Peg Leg Pirate, Inc. is committed to helping those less fortunate than ourselves in a unique way unlike any other Krewe in the area. There are many individuals that have to use orthotic or prosthetic devices due to loss of limb through accident or disease. While there are services and financial support for these individuals, the families still must bear a financial burden during the fitting, refitting and replacing of these devices. Ye Notorious Krewe of the Peg Leg Pirate, Inc. will identify and provide assistance to family members for transportation, lodging and meals while spending time at the hospitals and with the physicians. In time, we hope to expand these services to actually helping those less fortunate obtain the devices they need.
At the same time we intend to participate in community parades, have several major fund raising events, enjoy the companionship of others and have a good time in the spirit of the pirates of the Caribbean.
Respect. Each Member of The Krewe shall pledge to respect the confidentiality as it pertains to Krewe Members and gatherings. Every Member will respect the diversity of each person involved and shall work to the greater good of all. Each member shall understand that Krewe Membership is by invitation only. Membership carries with it certain responsibilities – dress like a pirate, have fun, throw lots of beads, and do what you can to help our charity be successful.
Costumes. Krewe costumes may only be worn to functions sanctioned by the Krewe. A committee comprised of members of the Board must approve costumes for new Members and changes or replacement of costumes of existing Members. There is a basic costume structure that all members are expected to adopt. For the men, it is black pants – no shorts but may be cut below the knee, a black vest (sleeveless or capped) and a Caribbean patterned shirt with sleeve length between the elbow and wrist. The women will have either a black skirt or black pants (must be below the knee), a black sleeveless or capped vest and a Caribbean shirt with sleeve length between the elbow and wrist. Head cover is required and may be of any style you choose. Shoes or boots must be black.
Volunteer Services. Individual Krewe Members are expected to participate in the fundraising activities to allow the Krewe to best help those that have been identified as being eligible for our assistance. Activities may be, but are not limited to, working on the planning of the activity, identifying contributors/sponsors to provide in-kind or cash contributions, publicity of the event, participation at the actual event to include set-up and clean up and any other duties as may be requested by the committee chairperson.
Conduct at Sponsored Events. All Krewe Members shall keep a good public image and maintain proper personal decorum. Krewe Members are expected to attend social and ceremonial functions of the Krewe in costume All Members are expected to conduct themselves in such a matter as to not bring discredit upon themselves, the Krewe or our sponsors. Failure of a Krewe Member to comply with this provision will result in discipline – anything from the reduction of grog rations to time spent in the brig.
Mutinous Actions and Procedures. Behavioral Complaints: Inappropriate behavior at any Krewe function will not be tolerated. A first time incident will result in a reminder by a member of the Board that the behavior is out of line. A second incident will result in suspension of the Member from participating in Krewe activities for a specified period of time or, if the inappropriate behavior is serious enough to have put any Krewe member in danger, may result in termination without the privilege of future application or consideration. Termination of Membership. Any Member who is no longer in good standing, has failed to comply with Krewe Bylaws and Articles of Piracy, or who no longer meets the eligibility requirements may have his/her Membership terminated. After careful review of pertinent information, the Board of Directors shall vote that either the Membership be continued or terminated.
Non-Members. Non-Members shall be allowed to march in the parades with the Krewe only upon the authorization of the Board of Directors. Non-Members are not allowed to ride on the float unless they are invited as part of a sponsoring organization and have medical reason for not being able to walk.
Parade Behavior:
1. Participation in parades is a privilege and not a right. Our Krewe must be invited to participate in the parades by the sponsoring Krewe. Inappropriate conduct viewed by the sponsoring Krewe’s Parade Officials is noted and may cause a denial to participate in the following years parade. There is no appeal procedure if we are denied. Parade Officials are not always recognizable. Always follow the sponsoring Parade Officials’ directives and instructions and abide by their restrictions.
2. If you are going to consume anything stronger than water, know your limits. There is a fine line between “having a good time” and “drunk and disorderly”. Should a member of our Krewe suggest you stop drinking, it is probably time to do so. If the Parade Marshall suggests you stop drinking, do it!!
3. All beverages, other than water, must be in a Krewe approved/supplied cup.
4. Absolutely NO SMOKING ALLOWED ON THE FLOAT. During staging, keep a safe distance from the float if you are smoking. The materials on the float are flammable
5. No illegal drug or unprescribed controlled substance use will be tolerated at any Krewe event. Use of such will result in immediate termination of membership.
Safety at a Parade:
1.Always stand clear of the float and tow vehicle while it is moving. Do not ever walk in front of the float vehicle or get between the tow vehicle and the float while it is moving
2.Do not ever attempt to exit the float or try to jump on the float while it is moving. The ramp will be available for those times that it is appropriate. In order to be safe, never leave anything on the ramp. It is to be used solely for access to the float itself. Anything left on the ramp will be disposed of by the Float Committee members.
3.Keep in mind that the float is a moving vehicle with frequent stops and starts. Like the deck of a ship, it moves without notice. Make sure that there is something close by that is stable and available for you to take hold of.
4.Barricades are in place to keep the crowd out of the street and you cannot, for any reason, cross these barricades absent a medical emergency with appropriate medical personnel. The float cannot voluntarily stop during the parade to allow a member to exit the parade to mingle with the crowd, family members or friends. Stay on the street side of the barricades.
5.If a medical emergency should arise, advise a Krewe Officer or Parade Marshall immediately. EMS personnel will be notified if you have to be taken off of the float. Normally, you will be transported to the nearest hospital, if warranted. If you are simply ill and refuse treatment, a seating place will be provided for you on the float
Parade Logistics: 1.Payment for the bus must be to the Purser at least 2-3 weeks prior to the parade depending n the parade. If not, you may pay by CHECK at the bus staging area ONLY if there is still room available on the bus. If you pay and then do not attend the parade or choose not to ride the bus, your money will NOT be refunded.
2.Please arrive promptly at the bus staging area. The bus will not wait for you. If you miss the bus, you must make alternative arrangements to get to the staging area on time before the parade starts.
3.The general/cheap “throwing beads” should already be on the float. If you are going to bring extra or special beads for trading or throwing, be sure to bring them in a small, collapsible case.
4.If you have a medical condition and will be riding the float rather than walking, remember that there are no assigned places to sit. Work with the other Krewe members so that all have a good place to sit and safely throw the beads.
5.At the end of the parade, the float must move quickly off the parade route to avoid bottle-neck congestion. Gather your personnel items and get off the float quickly as there will be other floats directly behind ours. Heed all warnings given to collect your personnel bags and property.
6.After the parade has ended, for safety reasons stay together as a group when walking to the bus. If you take the bus to the parade and have indicated that you plan to take the bus home, do not leave the group. If you must, notify the Parade Marshall of your intentions.
The Children’s Gasparilla Parade/Veterans Day Parade
These Parades are different than the others in that we invite our Associate Members to take part in the parade and walk the parade route with the float. There are also guidelines that all are expected to follow:
1.Guest may be the child or grandchild of a Krewe member. 2.The child must adhere to all Krewe rules and the sponsoring adult Krewe member is absolutely responsible for the safety of the child. 3.The sponsoring adult Krewe member must sign a Release on behalf of the child. If the sponsoring adult is not the parent of the child, a signed Release must be obtained from the parent of the child. 4.The child must be at least 10 years of age and able to walk the parade route. No child will be riding on the float unless he/she is a guest and has a prosthetic or orthotic device. 5.The child must be in a pirate costume. 6.The responsible parent/Krewe member must also walk with the child at all times. 7.The Children’s Day Parade is alcohol free.
