Assisting Amputees in the Tampa Area Since 2004
The Adventure Amputee Camp is located in the mountains of western North Carolina in the Nantahala Outdoor Center which is near Bryson City. The Adventure Amputee Camp, Inc., provides children who have suffered amputations the opportunity to stretch their reality and imagination of what is possible to achieve.
Camp activities include river rafting, high ropes and waterskiing. All activities are modified as necessary to meet the ability and interest level of each camper. Other activities (which can include bowling, crafts, games, swimming, and horseback riding) may be less physically stressful, yet provide many campers an experience that was previously untried, unobtainable, or unimaginable.
The physical challenges and peer support frees children from self or societal imposed restraints. Volunteers with amputations are role-models of adults who are living productive and fulfilled lives.
In 2008, 2009, 2010 the Krewe sponsored six children each year to attend the camp. In 2008 Darlene Williams, her daughter Jessie, and Sharon Rubright went to the camp to meet the kids and give them an afternoon pirate party. It was a day to be remembered. The campers were open, friendly and having a marvelous time. The day of the visit the campers went to a stone slurry to pan for gems, took a horseback ride into the mountains and ended their day at the swimming pool. The Krewe had pirate games, prizes and picture taking activities for the campers along with a pizza dinner.
In 2009 and 2010 no Krewe members were able to attend the camp. However, the Camp Director, Missy, reported that it was a terrific camp and that our scholarship campers thoroughly enjoyed themselves and benefited greatly from attending the camp.
In 2011 Krewe members, Terry and Shirley Huber, Fran and Denise Reiter and Sharon Rubright were able to travel to the mountains in West Virginia and volunteer at the camp. The pirate themed party and games were a huge hit with the campers. The Krewe continues its support of this outstanding organization with donations and camper sponsorships in excess of $10,000. We long forward to our next opportunity to travel to the camp and spend some quality time with the campers.
