Peg Leg Pirates Participated in the Ruskin Veteran’s Day Parade
On Saturday, November 13, 2004, Ye Notorious Krewe of the Peg Leg Pirate had the privilege of participating in the Ruskin Veteran’s Day Parade sponsored by VFW Post #6287. This was the first parade for the Krewe which was formed earlier this year. It was also the debut of the float that was designed and built entirely by Krewe members under the able direction of Admiral John McNeely. The Krewe wants to thank the following organizations that contributed materials for the construction or in some other way supported the Krewe: Larkin Contracting Co., Lewis Contracting Co., T-Con, Inc., U.S. Filters, Portable Sanitation of Tampa, Inc., and Phillip Wilburn with United Rental.
Close to forty members participated in the parade. They were joined by several veterans who currently reside in the Ruskin area: Richard Barraclough, Billie Fox, Robert Heinly, Jim Merrigan and Jack Isnard. These gentlemen proudly served this country in World War II and Korea. We were honored to have them join us.
The Krewe and float were presented the award for “The Most Entertaining Float”, by Post Commander George Hilton. The music was provided by DJ Gary Stebbins. All Krewe members reported having a wonderful time dancing to the music and throwing beads to the folks who came to see the parade. As one Krewe member said, “Just seeing the bright, shiny eyes of the children as you put a bead around their necks made it a very special day.”
Ye Notorious Krewe of the Peg Leg Pirate is a non-profit organization whose mission is to assist amputees, families of amputees and other organizations that work with amputees. They most recently presented a Handcycle to a young girl who had lost both of her legs. Heather is now able to compete in sponsored bike races which provide both recreational exercise and the opportunity to socially interact with others in her same situation. The Krewe is currently in the process of identifying other candidates to receive Handcycles.
