Tricycle Means Freedom For Girl, 6
By MARLENE BOGGS Tribune correspondent Published: Nov 13, 2005
BRANDON - -- Lexi Fuchs, and her father, Marty, traveled from Clermont to Brandon on Sept. 21 to meet members of Ye Notorious Krewe of the Peg-Leg Pirate, Maria Maranda of Maranda Insurance Agency and agency staffers.
Members of the krewe were in pirate costume, but the father and daughter, accompanied by Lexi's twin sister, Kalli, didn't come to get a preview of the Gasparilla Parade or buy insurance.
Lexi, 6, was born with one leg and was in Brandon to accept a custom tricycle purchased with funds raised by the insurance agency and the krewe.
"The staff of the physical therapy department at Shriners children's hospital notified the krewe that Lexi could benefit from having the custom tricycle," krewe member Sharon Rubright said. "These specially built trikes provide both the physical therapy needed, as well as the opportunity to socialize with other kids while riding bicycles and tricycles in their neighborhoods."
At the presentation, father and daughter thanked everyone for the job they had done.Rubright talked to Marty Fuchs after Lexi had the trike for a few days.
“He said she is just loving it and for the first time she is really able to get out there with the neighborhood gang," Rubright said.
"The krewe continues to raise money and seeks other partnerships to bring more handcycles and tricycles to those in need, as well as to provide needed services to amputees," Rubright said. For information, visit www.peglegpirate.org.
