FOR IMMEDIATE PRESS RELEASE

October 17, 2006

Tricycle Presented to Young Amputee

For the second time in a month Ye Notorious Krewe of the Peg Leg Pirate was able to present a young amputee with her own custom tricycle.  On Sept. 22, several members of the “Krewe” dressed in their pirate costumes joined the staff of the Physical Therapy Department of the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital in presenting a custom tricycle to 5 year old Nahomi Matamotos. Nahomi was born with a birth defect that resulted in both legs being stunted as well as both arms not being fully developed. Nahomi and her mother, Melanie, were brought from their home in Honduras so that Nahomi could get the necessary care at the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital.

While presenting a tricycle to another young amputee, the Krewe was informed by the staff of the Orthotic/Prosthetic Physical Therapy Department at the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital that Nahomi could also benefit from having the custom tricycle. These specially built tricycles provide both the physical therapy needed as well as the opportunity for the amputee to socialize with other kids while riding bikes in their neighborhood. Physical Therapist Arlene Sand was instrumental in modifying the tricycle and working with Nahomi to be sure that the tricycle would meet her needs.

At the presentation, through an interpreter, Melanie thanked everyone for all they had done. Nahomi rode around the area at the hospital to show everyone how well she could maneuver the tricycle. She had a big smile on her face the entire time. Nahomi is a very special child who won over the hearts of the Krewe members.

In addition to this tricycle for Nahomi, the Krewe has presented eight other tricycle/ handcycles to children who are receiving treatment at the Shriner’s Hospital. The Krewe continues to raise money and seeks other partnerships to bring more handcycles and tricycles to those in need as well as to provide other needed services to amputees. For more information on Ye Notorious Krewe of the Peg Leg Pirate, please visit www.peglegpirate.org.
