John M Miller

This year our Scholarship Fund has awarded $16,000 in scholarships to amputees attending colleges in Michigan, Texas, Iowa, Colorado, Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Florida. We have also awarded a $1,000 scholarship to a 7 year old in Jamaica who is an amputee so that she can attend a school which is able to work with her special needs.

ChrisChris is at Eastern Michigan University in Upsilanti. He is currently working on his Masters Degree in Orthotics and Prosthetics. Chris lost his leg in a motorcycle accident in 1988 but that hasn’t slowed him down much at all. In addition to his studies and work, Chris has been very active in establishing and leading an Amputee Support Group at the University Orthotic and Prosthetic Center.

Kyle is working on a degree in Journalism at York College of Pennsylvania. He was an active participant in his high school wrestling team and plans on pursuing the sport at York College. He wrestles without his prosthesis which he feels gives him both a mental and strategic advantage. In addition to wrestling, Kyle also enjoys tennis, rock climbing and kayaking.

KalebKaleb lost his leg above the knee in a farming accident in 2004. He lives with his large family on a farm and wants to continue to manage the family farm after college. He is working toward a degree in Animal Science and Agriculture Studies. Kaleb believes that it is not just important, but vital, for farmers to give what they can to the community and is quite involved with 4-H and his church youth group.

MeaghanMeaghan will be attending the University of Colorado at Boulder where she will be working on a Bachelors Degree in Psychology and Speech/Hearing Studies. Meaghan lost her leg to bone cancer in 1999. She has excelled in school at an academic level and has been very active in the high school color guard team. She is also an active fundraiser and volunteers at the Children’s Hospital in her home town.

AyeleAyele began his life as an orphan in Ethiopia. Both of his legs had been amputated in 1999. He was adopted by a U.S. State Department employee and brought to the US. He quickly learned English, was not hampered by his prosthetics and now plays golf, rides a bike, rock climbs and drives a car. He is also very musical. He will be attending Prince Georges Community College and then on to the University where he will major in Music, Communications and Film.

Miss ReiannaReianna is now 8 years old and is a double amputee who lives with her family in Jamaica. The Krewe first met Reianna through the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital when they gave her a tricycle. The school in her neighborhood was not able to properly meet her needs as a double amputee so the Krewe provided the tuition for Reianna to attend a private school where accommodations have been made to facilitate her needs. She is a bright and inquisitive child who is now in her second year of Krewe scholarship.

KyleTrevor will be attending Hardin Simmons University in Abilene, Texas in the pre-med program. His goal is to become a Physician’s Assistant and be able to help others as he himself has been helped. He lost his leg when he was 12 years old to cancer of the heel. He says that, “the support of the medical community, family and friends, has limited my handicap to being merely a physical one and even then, it does not keep me from doing the things I love”.

Edward lost his foot because of a birth defect and was helped through the prosthetic process by the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital. He will be attending Western Carolina University where he will be working toward his bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science and then the Master’s in Prosthetics and Orthotics. His professional goal is to work for the Shriner’s Hospital so he can “give back what the Shriner’s hospital gave to me”. He would also like to open his own prosthetics business.
